Music of Sowerby and Chopin recorded at First Church of Christ, Scientist, New York City in 1996. Charles Callahan and Lorenz Maycher play the church's magnificent 1903 Hutchings-Votey organ, heard here in all its latter-day splendor. Included are Callahan's thrilling live performances of Sowerby's "Fantasy for Flute Stops" and "Toccata." Mezzo-soprano, Gwendolyn Jones and Lorenz Maycher perform (in the first commercially issued recordings of these works) Sowerby's "Three Psalms" and "Songs of Faith and Penitence." William Watkins conducts a moving performance of Sowerby's ever-popular anthem "I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes" in a live performance during the 1996 AGO national convention. Pianist Tana Bawden rounds out the program accompanying Gwendolyn Jones in Sowerby's "O Perfect Love," and in solo works by Chopin. You won't want to miss this memorable album documenting a great American organ, recorded by Michael Barone and Christopher Greenleaf.
